On the Road - Day 22

Got the Meander 2009 blog up and running, ready to invite folks to see. Farewell Forks, Washington! Retraced our route along Rt. 101 to Port Angeles, followed a logging truck up a grade. Saw a mower - swung over the guard rail! Areas of trees are marked "State Trust lands, replanted in 1991, to be harvested in 2036", etc. So there is a 45 year growing period. The steep mountainsides down to Lake Crescent were formed by a glacier. The lake is 600' deep here. Though overcast, Lake Crescent is still beautiful. The water appears blue next to the green of the forested hills.

We have arrived in Port Angeles to catch the ferry over to Victoria, B.C. Nice to see the sunshine here. We bought our tickets and had time to check out the harbor area shops. Had coffee and a mango smoothie at the Itty Bitty Buzz coffee shop. Watched our ferry, the Coho, dock and unload. They certainly pack in the vehicles - motorcycles, cars, RVs and BIG 18 wheelers. Got our RV on board - squeezed our way around vehicles to get to the stairs. No one is allowed on the car deck once the ferry is underway. Took photos of Port Angeles as we moved away - most picturesque. Smooth ride.

Showed our passports and photo IDs to the Canadian Customs officer. He confiscated a pear! Can't bring certain produce into the country. Found a parking space downtown and walked to

Pagliacci's Italian Restaurant on Broad St. which was recommended by Bob in Newport, OR. Vance had their Casablanca Chicken and I savored the Curried Prawns. Delicious and fun.

Since it was 10 p.m. and the RV Parks are in outlying areas, we thought we'd just park the RV in a casino lot for the night, but found a Wal-Mart first. Security person pointed us instead to a Tim Horton (24-hour coffee/donut /breakfast-type place) parking lot nearby. Slept well, except for being awakened twice by dumpsters being picked up, shaken and dropped at 5:00 and 6:30 a.m. Clang!

Some interesting signs we have seen today: A Shot in the Dark Espresso, Blenz Coffee, Chapters Bookstore, Scotia Bank, Cheques Cashed, "Center" is spelled "Centre". Some busses have polite signboards saying, "Sorry, I am not in service". Some familiar names in Canada also: Denny's, DQ, Subway, Wal-Mart.

Ended at Tim Horton parking lot, Victoria, B.C.
