Reviewed and deleted photos. Delayed take-off as Vance was talking to a man who graduated from Tustin Union High School, class of '64 - No way! Discovered within 2 minutes of conversation! (He was from El Toro, near Tustin where Vance lived.) Planned time in Portland: Portland Art Museum for M.C. Escher exhibit , Japanese Garden and general checking out the locale.

We took the winding drive through Washington Park, stopping to lunch surrounded by trees. The Japanese Garden is remarkable, we could have spent the entire day there.

Lovely groomed walks of contrasting greens and rust/red leaves, many little waterfalls and Japanese bamboo fountains, loved the multitude of designs of stone walkways, exquisite patterns of dark shaded trunks and bright lively green leaves, the iris pond (of course) and the sand and stone meditation gardens.

We sat in one spot and calmed ourselves, being present we'd be aware of different areas of our vision, and suddenly notice something else like stairs leading up, then something else. Splendid sensory experience with varieties of color, texture, sound, patterns . Took photos of the Rose Garden on way back to RV.

Since it was getting towards 3 p.m., the commuter time, we opted to forgo the Escher exhibit. Portland is: steeply hilled with areas heavily forested, the downtown is next to a river; bordered by the Columbia River which separates Oregon from Washington; skyscrapers and a gondola! Lots of colleges. Many downtown streets are one way. Traffic on Rt. 5 was standstill, so we went east to 205, then North. Got to Kelso and checked out an RV Park, ho-hum.
Went to Safeway where I helped direct another RV into a parking space. Told her we planned to spend the night there since it was open 24 hrs. After we shopped she invited us to park in her driveway. We followed her up the hill a couple of miles and parked in her lower driveway - with a great view of the Columbia River! Betty Tanner was just returning from an RV trip to Michigan where she showed her three white German Shepherds: Spirit, Quest, Pirate (Pi) whose real name is Shiver-me-timbers. Beautiful, sweet dogs who obey from a distance!

[This picture was taken the following morning.] We (Kennedy's) prepared hummus and lavender cheese with flat bread, hotdogs, corn, salad and ice cream for supper for all. Delightful conversation of tales of travel in an RV and dogs we love, delightful company. Betty's daughter, Laura Domelo, is a professional photographer who does covers for famous singers' albums. The lights along the river made for a tranquil view. Saw Jim Dandy Espresso and noted Portland is on the Lewis and Clark Trail.
Ended at Betty Tanner's, outside of Kelso, Washington
