On the Road - Day 24

Began the day with a RV that wouldn't start. Vance called the Good Sam Club's emergency road service while Pat went swimming in the unheated outdoor pool and had a shower! They contacted Walter Kaiser of Valley Auto and RV who sent one of his employees to help get us started and over to where he could find out what was wrong. Spent most of the day there as they replaced a broken belt (the cause of our exhausted battery), fixed the cruise control (which had stopped functioning a few days ago) and discovered a possible broken wheel bearing. Since it is Saturday, the wheel bearing cannot be fixed until Monday. So we decided to stay local for a couple of days.

Pat writes: While the RV work was being done I walked to the nearby Red Barn Antique Shop to browse. They had a number of old gas pumps in prime condition. Couldn't find a Mobile - "Flying Red Horse" - pump, though. Vance's Dad had owned a Mobile distributorship in Santa Cruz, as well as a service station. I also found carousel horses, vintage soda fountain equipment, and farm goods like the glass top canning jars I used for pear butter. They had lots of china and glassware - and a few hat pins - which I collect. And then I discovered something I played with as a child! Mr. Peanut metal peanut dishes, which I had to buy.

Back to Vance: We made arrangements to stay today and tomorrow at the Hazelmere RV Park in Surrey, a nicer facility than the one we used last night. We got in here around four in the afternoon, in contrast to the 9:30pm arrival at last night's park. So we had time to slow down and explore our new home. We found a relatively large park with grass and large trees, swimming pool and hot tub--and well-established individualized landscaping at a number of long-term sites. We found a duck pond with fat and rested ducks, and a bridge over a creek with the wonderful sound of the water. We will be staying in this space tomorrow! For tonight we are in an open field but it is nicer than that sounds...mature shade trees and berry bushes behind us. A revival meeting is taking place at a group camp site a short distance away. We can hear the singing as we type this blog. Halleluiah! Hopefully they will honor the quiet time (11pm-8am) approaching.

Ended at Hazelmere RV Park, Surrey, B.C.
