On the Road - Day 45

Pat thoroughly enjoyed a soak in the RV Park spa, a nice large one with water just hot enough. I had it all to myself, too. Then I freshened up with a shower and we left to get gas at Costco. Felt familiar being there on a weekend, sampling tasty tidbits and being part of the bustling crowd. Leaving Costco, we passed a classic car show along the street. Cars were in great shape, and colorful to boot. We liked watching the spectators checking out the different models.

Took Rt. 205, the outer perimeter belt around Portland, to I-5 South and got into a traffic jam. We never learned why the back-up occurred, but it was bumper to bumper and slow going for a couple of miles. South of Salem, the Oregon state capitol, we drove through Independence. Also saw road signs for Sweet Home, and Sublimity. Oregon has them all.

Hot and hazy day. Took a break from driving and had something cool - milk shakes and a "Dutch Baby" (plate-sized eggy pancake served with lemon and powdered sugar) at Elmer's, an air conditioned restaurant in Salem. Afterwards Vance napped in the air conditioned RV while I bought groceries at air conditioned Fred Meyers - like a Wal-Mart. With all our adventuring it feels good to do something ordinary.

Haying in full swing now. Saw tractors busy pulling various haying implements. We are back into square bale territory. Viv used to call them "bundles" of hay - cute! We have seen a remarkable variety of haystacks on this trip.

Seen along the way: "SnoozInn" in Wilsonville -- a Solar demonstration project -- Sheep (it is too hot today for wolves to dress in sheep's clothing; for that matter, pity the poor sheep stuck wearing wool!)

Ended at Deerwood RV Park, 35059 Seavey Loop, Eugene, OR 97405 [deerwoodrvpark.com]
