On the Road - Day 54

Upon arising, Pat and I had a nice shower at Folsom Lake SRA (just 7 quarters!) and did the RV thing...she organized for travel and I dumped the holding tanks, added fresh water, moved off the levelers, and disconnected the power. We had cold cereal for breakfast. Then we were off into our new day.

On the way west on I-80 we saw Camping World in its new location in Vacaville. We pulled in and they reinstalled the rear bumper with stronger bolts than before. (Maybe next time the bumper will win over the post! -- or Vance will do a better job of checking out the rear before backing!)

On the way again, we discussed places we might stay on or near the coast. We're both tired of the heat. (We had the air conditioning on almost all night last night.) As we continued west it slowly became clear that, as in The Wizard of Oz, there was no place like home. We arrived around 4pm and began unloading the RV.

When we first entered the house, we saw it with new eyes: There is so much space! The ceiling is so high! The water runs endlessly, the toilet is beautiful and large, the shower doesn't have a water restrictor or a place to put quarters (or loonies) to keep it flowing. The bed is so large and has such easy access! And there will be no RV park charge tonight!

After we had unloaded the refrigerator and some of the closet we said, "That's enough." and I took Pat for a drive in the Camry...such a small space...and so quiet...and with air conditioning, too! We had a light dinner at Kabul, the afghan restaurant in San Carlos, before returning home to sort mail and add the many envelopes to the recyclables which go out tonight for pickup in the morning...ahh, the life of a homeowner again.

On the Road - Day 53

Got up early to beat the crowd to Sacramento area. Did well, Rt. 50 had light traffic. Chugged up to Echo Summit at 7,382 feet. From there our day was all "downhill," literally, from the Sierras.

Passed through the towns of Strawberry and Kyburz (which had a store sign with both "Welcome to Kyburz," and "Now leaving Kyburz"); the El Dorado National Forest; Pollack Pines, elev. 3,980, where, coming out of the mountains, Rt. 50 changed from a 2 lane route to a 4 lane freeway. Could see flat land in the distance. When the forests thinned out, billboards began to dot the highway. The communities sprang up and spread out. Ah, we're back in civilization!

At Placerville we left Rt. 50 to venture cross-country on Rt. 49 to Auburn. It was a nice change of pace to drive this gently winding and sometimes steep 2-lane road through attractive farm and grassland. We really enjoyed it. Passed through the towns of Coloma, Lotus and Cool. After crossing the South Fork of the American River, we reached Auburn, "Gateway to the Sierras."

It was time to deal with growly tummies. We headed to the Old Town area (where we stopped for an evening meal five years ago when traveling from Maine with Pat's belongings in a new ten-foot U-Haul truck). Here we looked around for where the locals were dining. Discovered Awful Annie's had "awfully good" cinnamon orange iced tea, and surprisingly good cold tomato pesto soup. Pat's banana pecan waffle was excellent, as was Vance's Polish sausage on marble rye.

Walked up the hill to the Joss Temple - an old building where Chinese families could gather and relax. The children learned Chinese language and culture here. Interesting photographs and original artifacts. The building sat abandoned for many, many years, and the things in it remained. We spoke with some of the people who cleared the cobwebs and opened it to tourists.

Visited a number of the gold mining era shops. At the Auburn Old Town Gallery Pat was trying to choose between some earrings and a necklace that she liked. Vance treated her to both! What a lucky duck.

Headed to the Fairgrounds, site of the Gold Country Museum. Walked through a hard rock mine entrance and learned various ways gold was extracted from the earth and rivers.

Watched a little boy pan for gold. Miners and their families came overland, sailed around the Horn, and walk/sailed across Panama to get to the gold fields. Most made barely enough to keep body and soul together. VERY hard work.

Taking I-80, (6 lanes wide!) we reached Rocklin, in the Sacramento Valley. Sunday traffic slowed to a crawl. It was soooo hot, we really needed a cool drink. Colonel Sanders winked at Pat at the KFC /A & W where we stopped for an afternoon A&W root beer float (and air conditioning).

As you can see, we have had an up and down day:
Elev. 6,254 feet, South Lake Tahoe
Elev. 7,282 feet, Echo Summit
Elev. 1,255 feet, Auburn
Elev. 218 feet, Folsom, where we stopped for the night at "Beals Point" of the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. Vance knocked off the back bumper while backing up to check out the site we selected. We just loaded it into the RV and parked as planned. Pat scouted the area, taking photos of Folsom dam and the very low Folsom Lake. The water must be at least 1,000 feet farther out than expected (which made for a very wide "beach").

Seen along the way: turban-topped vans (colorful rubber rafts strapped to roofs of whitewater rafting outfitter vehicles) -- Pony Express route marker -- "Memory Lane" offered old time candy -- long wire farm fence with old shoes atop each stake -- Sutter's Mill Discovery Site -- in Auburn, "the oldest continuously used post office in California" -- many bicyclists.

On the Road - Day 52

Vance got up early and uploaded yesterday's blog while Pat slept in. Then we had breakfast: eggs with sausage and bacon. After Pat's shower we left for Ridge Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada, where Joy and I had a timeshare. We left the RV by the security kiosk at the foot of the property. The officer said he would keep an eye on it and called for a shuttle to take us up the hill. I first took Pat to the Tower building, in the process finding an open suite (while it was being made up before a new arrival). So Pat had an opportunity to see what the Tower suites looked like. She took a number of pictures out the windows of the Ridge Tahoe property and of the Carson Valley. This longer eastern view was hazy from the smoke of some nearby fires.

We then walked over to the Plaza building and again I was able to find an open (and empty) suite. While the maid cleaned the smaller bedroom we walked in (what was the worst that could happen?) and looked at the living room, kitchen, bathroom and master bedroom. I then tried to show Pat the eighth floor hot tubs but didn't have a key card to let us in and no one with a card came by.

Next, we checked out the outdoor/indoor swimming pool, deli, store (where she purchased some postcards), wallyball/handball court and registration area. After all this, Pat had a pretty good idea of the Ridge Tahoe layout and amenities, and kept our camera busy as you can see from some of these photos. Security then shuttled us down to the door of our RV.

We drove to the west side of the ridge for views of Lake Tahoe. Then back down Kingsbury Grade and took Hwy. 50 to explore a bit of the east side of the lake. Lunched at Coyote Grill and went next door to Safeway for a few items. Knew we weren't in California anymore, as Safeway had video lottery and slot machines!

Parked lakeside off Lakeview Road and sat on a bench to watch the world go by. Folks picnicking, biking, kayaking, swimming (safe/shallow beach), playing volleyball, sunning themselves on the beach, taking in the view. Took photos of the mountains, Casinos, and a sternwheeler tour boat going past. Also captured wildlife: ground squirrels and geese. Had fun taking pictures.

Returned to Tahoe Valley Campground to relax. Very pleasant under the tall pines.

Seen along the way: South Lake Tahoe has busy 4 lanes of traffic with a 5th lane in the middle for turning into various businesses (Vance remembers just 2 lanes here) -- Daggett Summit at the top of Kingsbury Grade, at 7,334 feet -- They grow big boulders here -- Thai One On, restaurant & bar -- Wide Awake, Conscious Cafe, whatever that means -- Cloud 9 Wedding Chapel.

On the Road - Day 51

Chilly night. Blueberry pancakes, melon, bacon and hot chocolate at the Huddleston trailer to begin the day.

Watched Stevie and Dennis play checkers. Spied blue jays as they pestered tiny brown birds and medium sized black birds - bothersome dudes. Bid everyone farewell and headed south on Rt. 89 through Graeagle. Will have to remember that there's water there for boating/ kayak- ing as well as golf & horseback riding. Cute town is all of four blocks long.
Went through the Tahoe National Forest, climbing to 6,000 feet. Rt. 89 crossed I-80 in Truckee.

Stopped for lunch at the Bridge Tender in Tahoe City, where we had our first glimpse of Lake Tahoe. Walked on the bridge over the Truckee River, the only outlet from Lake Tahoe. This river does not flow to the sea, it flows to another lake. No water from Lake Tahoe reaches the sea!

Continued on Rt. 89 along the western shore, according to Rich (and Vance) this is the prettier drive. Very nice walk/jog/bicycle path around Lake Tahoe. Parked at Inspiration Point, a turnout for views of Emerald Bay - gorgeous! There was a stern wheeler just going past the little island (the only one in Lake Tahoe) there. Loved it all.
Since Ridge Tahoe is booked solid for the weekend, we reserved one of the last sites at Tahoe Valley Campground in South Lake Tahoe. After we got settled in our site (next to the restrooms, a propane tank and hydrant) we took a walk/hike around the campground, over a hill and through a meadow to a bridge over the Upper Truckee River. An airplane flew low overhead, as the airport is very close by. Collected some big pinecones which I will use to decorate the evergreen in our back yard. Had beef stew and salad for supper. Enjoyed seeing various campfires and the families gathered round roasting marshmallows, softly playing guitar, or talking story. Cozy.

Along the way: Scraps, "dog bakery and healthy grub" -- Turned round a bend and smelled Christmas trees! -- Pat saw a deer -- Rusted metal badminton birdie, jumbo sized (an incinerator) -- Squaw Valley -- Pat lifted an extra heavy weight!
